Statement
Andrew Veloso Watkinson (2000, Canada) has mixed feelings about death. Curious about every medium, they look toward method and material for insights and parallels to the shape of living and dying. Their drawings, textiles and ceramics often take the form of patterns, maps and vessels - all diagrams that reconsider what we say about death.
Elaborating on histories of rejecting and accepting death, Andrew’s work is visually and conceptually concerned with the human body. In their drawings and textiles, the body disappears into its surroundings or is rewoven into fractals; in ceramic vessels and armour, they explore the nature of preservation and ‘grounding’; and in workshops and performances, the body is an inroad to contemplation or an instrument for quieting the mind.
Andrew Veloso Watkinson (2000, Canada) is a visual artist based in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Working with ceramics, drawing, textiles and video, they approach ideas and fears surrounding death through methodical, intuitive processes.
Since finishing their BFA at ArtEZ, Andrew V.W. has worked both autonomously and in collaborative, collective contexts. Branching beyond solitary art making, they have given workshops and held digital and public performances focused on co-creation.
