Andrew Veloso Watkinson (2000, Canada) approaches each new process with a set of rules to push drawing, painting, textile, and ceramic through. What comes out the other end is often a diagram, a map, a vessel or a relic. They continuously ask what we might learn about the process of living and dying by testing the limits of the rules they follow and the materials they use. As a result, the imagery in their work is often bodily, patterned and buried in itself. What secret is everything trying to tell you?
Andrew has shown the results of their work in group shows at ACEC, Omstand, and Dat Bolwerck and more recently in a solo show with the Tuinkamer Projects. Beyond exhibiting, giving workshops and collaborative making are essential to their process. They’ve given workshops at the Some Days Some Arts festival and at the Weaving Past Into Future Residency.
